A Youth Voice Consultant’s Reflection on Laughter, Belonging, and Connection

At 7:30 every morning, the single yellow school bus rolled through the city, making its loop to pick everyone up, no matter where they lived. This wasn’t just any school bus - it was the loop bus, the unofficial comedy club on wheels.

The back two rows? That was where the magic happened. It was the stage for corny jokes, belly laughs, and endless fun. My good friend Lynn and I would always sit in the back. Issac, the driver, always added to the vibe, cracking jokes and joining in on the laughter. The bus wasn’t just a ride to school; it was a ride into joy, a daily dose of humor before the day even began.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

Looking back, I realize the loop bus also offered something young people need more of today: a space where they could simply be themselves. We talked, laughed, connected, and created our own sense of community.

That same principle is at the heart of effective youth voice and youth leadership work. Young people are more likely to participate, contribute ideas, and step into leadership when they feel comfortable, connected, and valued. Youth engagement does not always begin with a formal leadership title, committee, or program. Sometimes it begins with creating an environment where young people know their personalities, perspectives, and voices are welcome.

In my work providing youth voice consultation, youth leadership workshops, and support for schools and organizations, I encourage adults to think beyond simply inviting young people into the room. The bigger question is: What kind of room are we creating once they arrive?

Strong youth voice programs give young people opportunities to build relationships, share ideas, make decisions, laugh, create, and lead. Those moments of connection can become the foundation for deeper engagement and meaningful youth leadership.

And sometimes, the spaces young people remember most are not the most elaborate ones. They are the places where they felt like they belonged.
